Meet Jaclyn

I am a client relationship manager within Marsh’s Private Equity and M&A practice (PEMA) based in London (I’m actually an American living in London). I work with colleagues around the globe to deliver innovative solutions to our global Private Equity clients to help them quantify and manage risk and create value, both for new acquisitions and existing companies that they invest in.

Why did you choose to go into the insurance industry?

I worked for years in government, initially employed at the White House in the US before moving across the pond to work for Tony Blair. By happenstance, I ended up at the Carlyle group (one of the first private equity houses in the world) and fell in love with the diversity of the work and was inspired by the leadership and the incredible talents in the industry.

How has your education or previous work experience translated to working at Marsh?

I have worked in the private equity industry for over nine years, previously within KPMG’s London-based private equity group, followed by the Carlyle Group’s tax team in Washington, DC. Both of these roles provided an incredible education and a broad understanding of the private equity industry and clients’ needs. I thoroughly enjoy the diversity of the PEMA clients and their varied businesses, and I naturally gravitate to developing relationships and creating a tailored approach to meet their needs exhilarates me.

What do you do to make others feel included and create an environment of belonging?

It’s important to spend time getting to know and investing in your colleagues. Bringing your authentic self to work affords others the opportunity to learn and understand different points of view and achieve better outcomes. With the aim of driving gender diversity, in 2022, I, along with several women on the UK PEMA team, launched the PEMA Women’s Network initiative in the UK. We held a series of client-facing events that were wildly successful. With the support and encouragement of UK PEMA leadership, we have expanded this initiative to our colleagues globally, with plans to include other Marsh McLennan practices in the near future.

The mission of this initiative is to foster women's leadership and advance career development within PEMA, drive diversity and inclusion efforts, recruit more women to our team, build community, and support one another across the globe. This is being done through a series of internal and external events and activities to build relationships and expand our business development opportunities. I am incredibly proud of what we have been able to build in such a relatively short period of time.

Tell us something important about your family or background that helped form the person and colleague you are today.

Coming from a lower socioeconomic background and being raised by a single mother, I have firsthand experience with the challenges around social mobility. In the private equity industry, it can be even more challenging considering the socioeconomic backgrounds and lack of diversity historically found within the industry.

I have always been very blessed to have strong female mentors. It is important to have people that look like you doing great things and breaking glass ceilings. Learning to ask for help, working hard, and having the benefit of these mentors that have guided and been role models for me have provided the support and opportunities that I have needed to build my career.
